Recovery From A Ruptured Ovarian Cyst

Ovarian cyst. Doesn’t sound like much. You hear about them as vague stories. Occasionally someone will mention one. But what are they?

I am writing this for those women who are experiencing what I have or are wondering what is happening or could happen with them. I am writing for those who are looking for a way to help deal with the after effects that seem to linger for awhile. It is a week today that my 4.5cm by 5cm cyst ruptured on my way home from vacation.

Let me start by explaining that I am no stranger to pain. I have born three pregnancies, miscarried a fourth. All were born vaginally, the first and second 8lbs 7oz and 8lbs respectively. Four months pregnant with twins, I was in a car accident which left a torn labrum, lower back muscle damage and, unbeknownst to me for a few years, a fractured pelvis. I have lived with the accident damage for 4.5 years and hope to get the surgery to fix it soon.

After an MRI to discover why I still have hip pain after so long, the results came back plus an added blurb stating I had a rather large cyst on my right ovary. Having never had such a thing and mistakenly believing that if it were something needing to be worried about I would be informed by my doctor, I left for a two week vacation. We drove through the Rocky Mountains to visit family on the other side, camping along the way and back. While visiting, I went to a therapist who gave me pelvic exercises to strengthen my core for surgery. I noticed that after doing them, I would experience an achy pain along my right lower belly. I foolishly assumed it was just my other hip compensating for the damaged one and causing trouble. I took Ibuprofen and it went away.

On our second day of driving through mountains, the pelvic pain came back. I took Ibuprofen and waited for it to kick in. Nothing. So I took some more. The pain got worse. I thought okay, maybe I just need to go to the bathroom really badly. Who wants to go to the hospital with nothing but a bad tummy ache? We stopped at a rest stop. Nope, it wasn’t that. We started to drive and the pain became intense; very similar to having my second child. It was as though someone had thrust a sword through my stomach, pelvis, and right side all the way to my lower back. Pain wrapped itself down the front of my thigh to my knee. It felt like the sword was not being thrust in over and over but being spun around while still inside my guts. Trying to keep my 3 year old twins from becoming upset and making the 45 minute drive to the nearest place large enough to have a hospital worse, I hunched over my belly and tried to breathe like Lamaze teaches. Because the staff wasn’t sure if it was appendicitis or a cyst, after an IV, blood test and some more morphine, I was ambulanced off in a 3 hour ride to the city.

In the city hospital, there were more blood tests and the doctor confirmed that I’d “blown a cyst”. I asked through a haze of pain and morphine if that was like in NASCAR when they blow a tire and hit the wall. He eyed my navel ring and stated that it couldn’t hurt worse than that. I looked at him like he was daft. He told me that if I lived in the city I would have been sent home and had to come back for an ultrasound in the morning but, being an out-of-towner, I was given a bed for the night.

Bright and early they came to do the ultrasound. First, the type they do when you’re pregnant. Then out came the “wand” with the warning of, “This may be a little uncomfortable but it shouldn’t hurt.” Well, it might not have hurt if the cyst hadn’t ruptured but shoving a large object up my kooch and plowing around trying to get good views of all the cysts (apparently, there are more in there) was, dare I say, rather good at producing pain! There the four of us were, all huddled in the dark, watching (well, they were) the screen change as the male tech waved his magic wand, eerie blue light throwing ugly shadows on the darkened machinery. It was like we were doing something dark and dirty; the makings of a sordid secret. I kept my flinching to myself and when I got back to my room, grittily asked for more pain medication.

Another set of blood work to find out if I had any infection resulting from the “blow out”. None so I was sent on my way after instruction given to have a repeat ultrasound after my next period. I had requested painkillers for the 4 hour drive home and so was sick from dehydration when I finally arrived home.

The next day, I am wondering what the heck happened to me. My stomach was bloated. I had terrible diarrhea (sorry but I must be blunt since no one else is willing to do so) and pain if I stood for more than a few minutes. I assumed it was everything I’d been through making its way out of my system. Three days later, it’s still going on. I’m still bloated. I’m still having diarrhea but not quite as often. I get on my computer to research cysts.

It’s all the same information. What they are (in layman’s terms: small, blister-like formations inside the body that can be found throughout 80-90% of women, may be cancerous but very unlikely, usually watery fluid but occasionally bloody), the different types (generally but not explained much), how they check for them (pelvic exams and ultrasounds, sometimes MRI’s if they get big enough), what they do if they’re concerned (“Watchful Waiting” meaning: either it goes away on its own, ruptures, or if it gets too big, they operate and remove it). Also, the pill can be prescribed for certain types which are considered the “treatment” for them.

There is no mention of the aftermath. I think perhaps because most medical articles seem to be written by men, they haven’t the complete understanding of just how much something like this can hurt nor of how long complete recovery seems to take. Wikipedia was the only place I found any reference to 4-10 days of recovery time and some ideas to help the symptoms. I asked about and a few women told me of their own experiences. Most had not had a rupture but of the few that did, they described it as being extremely painful and similar to my own experience of aftermath. Because there is so little information on how to make the fluid remaining to escape faster or recover faster, I am writing what I learned.

THERE IS NOTHING THAT WILL MAKE IT GO FASTER.

But there are a few things that will aggravate it! You need to rest up for as long as it takes (between the 4 and 10 days). Don’t lift anything if you can possibly help it! I know how hard that is to do if you have work or kids or you’re on your own even. Life doesn’t stop because you hurt. But, take it from me; lifting will not help you in any way positive!

I asked for any advice from anyone I could think of (doctor, chiropractor, holistic healers, women who’ve been there) and these are the things I found. Some may work; others may not do anything for you.

- Ibuprofen (around 600 mg at a time, max 3x a day) or Tylenol. The painkillers given to me at were Morphine and Percocet to get home with. I don’t recommend either of those unless the pain is unbearable.
- Heating pad or hot water bottle is absolutely excellent for the cramping sensation. There was mention of icing occasionally as well.
- Warm bath with lavender essential oil or chamomile (both?) essential oil to help draw out any excess toxins in your body.
- Chamomile tea and lavender tea were suggested both to drink and to try using as a poultice on the affected area. I have also been putting a small drop of lavender essence on each foot.
- Milk Thistle was suggested as a possible preventative. Vitamin A and B may help, as well. There is currently some testing of Chinese herbs in conjunction of cyst prevention and recovery but I don’t have any real information on it.
- Reflexology and Reiki may be beneficial. Foot reflexology is gentle and not manipulating the actual parts that hurt. Reiki is a hands-off, meditative type of healing.
- There are a few different types of healing crystals that may work for you too. I’m a big believer in “It may sound funny but if it works I’m willing to try it!” so I’ll tell you the ones I know of. There may be more out there. Carnelian, hematite, azurite, malachite, moonstone, turquoise, chrysocolla, peridot – there are quite a few and I think it depends what you are drawn to, as well.

It’s been a week since my 4.5 by 5cm cyst ruptured and I’m finally starting to feel better. I hope my experience can save you some time and unhappy energy looking for ways to make yourself feel better.

Thank you for writing this! i just got out of the hospital emergency room. I found this by searching on google. I am having extreme pain, but, like you, am no stranger to pain (I have a chronic illness). Now I'm much less worried =]

I don't know if you even blog on this particular page any more, but I want to thank you for your descriptions! I was doped up on morphine and can not remember everything the doc said about recovery time. I expected to be better after 2 days! It's day 4 for me and I'm finally off of pain medication :) and PRAYING for the fluid to go down quickly. I'm a runner and missed a race yesterday because of this thing. Again, thank you for the insight!

Finally, someone that has really described the pain! I had a cyst rupture on my right ovary 6 days ago. I described the pain to the paramedics and doctors on a scale of 1-10 it was a 12. I have a high pain threshold but this was like nothing I had ever been through before! Out of the blue, I had a extremely fast build up of pain in the area where you get your period. The pain spread through my hips, groin and oddly in my rectum. I couldn't get comfortable. I felt sick and hobbled my way to the bathroom, whilst almost passing out twice. When I arrived at the hospital, after waiting 3 hours to see a doctor, I had an ultrasound to tell me that I have a cyst on my left ovary and HAD a cyst on my right ovary that ruptured. After a further 4 and a half hours I was sent home with painkillers and anti-inflammatories and a date for when I have my pelvic ultrasound. Today (day 6) I still feel like I have been beaten around in there. Thank you for sharing your encounter with the dreaded ruptured cyst.

Yes thank you for this! I had a cyst removed 2 weeks ago when they thought it was appendicitis. The surgeon told me 'some people run the next day' and so I thought there was something wrong with me when 6 days later I still didn't feel well. I have 3 boys under 2 and a half so even with my husband home it was difficult to rest so it wasn't until day 11 I felt back to myself. My advice is REST!

Ah, what a breath of fresh air! I just got back from the hospital last night and had a cyst rupture on my right ovary. This is one of many for me, and I find it infuriating when doctors or websites minimizing the pain to "cramping." My stomach ballooned like I was 5 months pregnant and I could barely walk. With one day off today I am back to work tomorrow and fearing the 8 hours on my feet.

You are absolutely right about no one writing any info on the after math of a "blow out"! I have been having the SAME exact pain and situation you described since last Monday (it is now Sunday, so 1 week). Tuesday into Wednesday morning I swore I had the stomach flu times 10. I also woke up with my period Tuesday morning after having it for 2-3 days a week and a half before (which is not normal for me to be irregular). The pain, bloating, vomitting, dizziness, everything is exactly what I had experienced. Friday night about 5-6pm I went to Urgent Care bc it hurt so bad. It came and went after the all nighter Tuesday into Wed. UC told me they believed I had a cyst on my right ovary and would need to come back Monday for an ultrasound to confirm this. I was back to the ER that next morning at 5am with excruciating pain again! After all the blood tests, internal and external ultrasounds the doctor told me NOTHING was wrong with me!!! I insisted that I may not be a doctor, Im only 24 so he may think I am ignorant, but Ive had more periods then I can count and know my body. He told me that I was in the middle of my cycle and my ovary was just "trying to release an egg"! I laughed at him and told him again that I know how my body feels and when something is wrong I know it, hence my reason for being in the ER. He made me feel like I was some junky just looking to get a high or attention. They gave me a shot (forgot what the name of the medication was) but it was relayed to be that 1mg of this medication was equal to 10mg's of Morphine. This was the only time I never felt any of the pain. This doctor then did not even prescribe me any pain medication. It is now 24 hours after I left the ER and I am at a loss as far as what to do. I know I should go get a second opinion but my question is, if it was a cyst and it ruptured the night I was very sick, would they have been able to see anything on the ultrasound 4-5 days later? If not I believe this is what was wrong but, I am really concerned to say the least....ANY SUGGESTIONS? Thank you again!

oh my gosh..what a HUGE blessing you are. I had a cyst rupture that was "quite sizable", per the dr...early Wednesday morning. I have never ever had that kind of pain before. I have been resting and trying to take it easy since I came home from the hospital. I am not taking the percocet they gave me..but am taking regular Ibuprofen. But I've had severe diarrhea and bloating. I am exhausted and doing simple things like washing dishes are exhausting me. Thank you for writing this and giving encouragement!!

I just had the same incident yesterday but mine caused internal bleeding. doctor told me NOT to take anything but tylenol or motrin due to the fact that other medications can increase the bleeding. Your tips are very helpful though just thought i would let you know that tidbit of info

I have had two cysts "blow out" in the last two years...it is exactly how you describe it!!! And you are right when you say that they lessen the pain to "cramping"...it is far from that!!! Thank you for reaching out!

Thank you so much for posting your stories - it's so hard to find any information on ruptured cysts! Mine ruptured last week (8 days ago) and I'm still concerned at the dull aches/pain I'm feeling.

When it happened, it was exactly as you describe - like a sword being twisted inside and i could barely breathe/move/speak. This pain came and went for the first three days in waves like contractions and I was admitted to hospital and told my pelvis had a lot of fluid inside but only given 400mg ibuprofen (!) which just took the edge off but never stopped the acute pain at all.

Luckily it subsided after three days and i was discharged from hospital but 8 days later, I still have the constant ache and the occasional 'twinge'. Mine was a 6cm ovarian cyst (on the right side which apparently is the most common) and it ruptured the month after I completed a cycle of IVF.

I've been told by one doc to go back for a scan after my next period to check it's shrinking (3 weeks after the rupture) but a second opinion has told me to scan it once a week and monitor the size to check its healing.

Anyway, I hope anyone reading this is in some way comforted to know they're not alone, I hope it never happens to any of us again! Get well soon xx

THANK YOU for this description! Last Friday I had really intense abdominal pain out of the blue. It was like terrible menstrual cramps combined with that feeling you get right before having diarrhea combined with fluctuating stabbing pains. I felt it all through my abdomen below my belly button and also felt pain/pressure deep near my tailbone. I got lightheaded and nauseous and had to sit down, it hurt too much to move.

After about an hour I felt like I might be able to handle driving myself home, so I hobbled out to my car. And I mean hobbled -- hunched over going reaaaallly slowly with small shuffling steps. I was in pain for the rest of the night and found it hard to sleep.

Since I was still hurting a lot the next morning, I went to an Urgent Care place. By then it was more of a constant, dull ache that became a sharper pain any time I moved. The Urgent Care doc did a pelvic exam and thought it was a 'muscle strain' or maybe an infection, so they gave me antibiotics and Ibuprofin and tested me for a bunch of STIs. For the rest of the weekend I sat still as much as possible because moving hurt, my stomach was bloated and I was kind of freaked out.

Monday and Tuesday I was finally feeling somewhat better. All my tests had come back negative. Then I stumbled across this description, which finally clicked. I went to see my gynecologist and she sent me to get an ultrasound, which is when they discovered the 5cm cyst on my right ovary. She said either it bled/leaked fluid into my pelvic cavity, or it may have twisted itself or the ovary, both of which are super painful and have potential to cause some nasty complications. (She also said if I ever have pelvic pain like that again to go straight to the ER, not an Urgent Care place, heh).

I have to go back for another ultrasound in 4 weeks to see if it has shrunk down or gone away by then. So glad I read this description and went to see a professional who knew to insist on an ultrasound!

Thank you for posting this. I was sent home after an all day torture session at the ER after which, after pumping me full of I.V. pain meds which did little to ease the searing pain, and every test known to man, I was abruptly released and treated like a hypochondriac and handed a prescription of Vicodin with a shrug from the doctor who said he didn't find anything wrong with me and to follow up with my regular doctor. My own doctor looked at the ultrasounds and CT scans and knew immediately that I had a ruptured ovarian cyst and finally I had validation that my pain was "legitimate.". The paint and nausea has stayed with me, now 3 days after my ER visit. I was searching for answers as to how much longer I might have to endure this. I so appreciate reading this from someone else who has been through it.

I was getting ready for bed and all of a sudden I had a sharp pain in my ovaries, thinking I had to use the restroom due to having IBS. Then all of asudden I was bent over in excruciating pain and could not move, I started vomiting all over. My boyfriend rushed me to the hospital and the pain was a 10. I got there pain slowly got better after they put me on an iv drug stronger than morphine. They did tests and ct scans, found blood in my urine and ruptured cysts and bladder infection. The dr acted like no big deal didn't give me any real direction what to do after.. Called my gyno and told me to come in for an ultra sound next week, it just happened last night. I'm exhausted/ drained and in more moderate pain, nothing like how it felt when it ruptured. I'm taking norcos every 6 hrs, not really helping and I can't keep any food down. I wish I had more direction, glad to know its not just me.

I have to echo what many people have commented, thank you for writing this! This is my third ruptured ovarian cyst but, unlike thee last two, this one is hemorrhaging and the pain and nausea have been lingering for a week. The ER MD told me my symptom of diarrhea had nothing to do with it so thank you for your honesty re your experience. I'm a RN and need to get back to work but can't stand being on my feet for more than 1 hr (much less lifting and moving around for 12+ hours) so hopefully this all disappears soon. I'm going in for a repeat CBC today...we'll see.

I just got home from the hospital for an apparent ovarian cyst.

I experienced pain last night that I thought was gas. Then I felt nauseous, I took some pepto but it didn't do anything. Then serious cramps set in. But they weren't normal cramps they were awful. I hobbled from my boyfriends apartment to my car and cried the whole way home. I couldn't sit comfortably at all I had stabbing pains in like, my rectum too.

When I got home, I was sure I had food poisoning. I posted up in my bathroom waiting for the diarrhea or vomiting to begin. It never came but the cramps worsened until I was lying on the floor groaning and crying.

I gave up on barfing and got into bed. I couldn't find a comfortable position for a long time. Finally, I found one and I went to sleep. I woke up the next morning and the pain had not subsided or dulled.

I got up and tried to use the restroom. At this point I thought I was constipated. The cramps were the same as the night before.

Urinating was difficult. I felt pressure and pain when I urinated.

At this point I was lying in bed and I was convinced I had appendicitis. I went to my nearest urgent care. I experienced sharp pains when I took too deep of breaths in my back, which was awful because when I cried I took gulping breaths that made it worse.

I finally settled down enough got to the UC and sat for a few hours. Sitting up pretty straight wasn't too painful.

When the doctor had me lie on my back for examination though, it was too painful, I had to sit up.

Meanwhile I had gas I couldn't pass.

She examined me sitting up. Thought it might be related to pregnancy.

Finally after a negative pregnancy test she sent me to my hospital.

I waited for hours, got a ct scan, and finally they told me I had a ruptured ovarian cyst.

I wasn't even aware I had cysts on my ovaries.

They sent me home with nothing.

Advised me to get a blood test to make perfectly sure I wasn't pregnant.

I am still suffering from sharp stabbing pains in my lower abdomen. Any bowel movement, or urination hurts like heck.

I've taken some ib profuen which helps slightly but I still feel pain. Standing up straight is painful too. Any hiccup, sneeze, cough, or deep breath sends horrible pain through my lower abdomen.

I'm glad I found this blog, I hope I recover very soon. Christmas is in two days, I don't want to feel terrible on Christmas!

Thank you for your post! I've been trying to read up on recovering from an ovarian cyst. I'm still in the recovery process...about 5 days in.

Had a CT scan 2 days ago and found out a burst cyst was causing my pain. After looking at the pictures of giant cysts from your links I thought, "No wonder it hurts so bad!"

Thanks for the suggestions for easing the pain. Hoping its gone soon! Thanks for helping those of us who have gone through this!

Purrkitten,

I have been searching high and low for information like this. I've been having pressure on my left lower abdomen for 2 weeks now. I made an appointment with my OBGYN this past Monday. Ultrasound showed instantly a 5cm(gulf_ball) cyst on my left ovary.

I am preparing for the worst, but in a positive state of mind. I just feel left in the dark after I left with this...

What puzzled me was when the Dr was explaining, he mentioned that my cyst was condensed and had texture in it(normally just a clear-like fluid in most cases). l was put on birth control pills because I have a marina IUC, which doesn't prevent cyst unlike b/c/p's. I will return in 2 weeks for an ultrasound to see if the pills shrunk it any.

ok so I was ok with that, but I started thinking, condensed....texture....??? Well what is it? So my main concern is if this ruptures, what's all that "condensed texture stuff" going to do if it does rupture?....I really don't understand "ALL" the possible internal effects it can lead to. Basically will/or is it capable of any sort of infection or anything in that category...?

Thanks for opening up about this. It wasn't easy finding detailed information about ruptured ovarian cyst. I am unsure that I experienced a ruptured ovarian cyst since I do not have health insurance I didn't go to the doctor's or hospital. However, I have had feelings of ovarian cysts during ovulation and I had a good feeling it was ruptured few days ago. My cousin went to the hospital because of it few years ago so I was aware of it but I never thought it could happen to me. My symptoms sound very similar to the ladies here so I do hope I had a ruptured cyst rather than cancer or appendix.

So here is what happened. Before I slept I felt like I needed to relieve a bowel movement but I couldn't so I just ignored it and assumed I can just get that done in the morning when I wake up. Instead it kept waking me up. I thought I was constipated and I finally went a little bit in the early morning then I went back to sleep. When I got out of bed for the third time I felt quite normal but there was still something in my rectum. Right when I was about to brush my teeth I felt like I needed to poop. My stomach was aching and something was moving or it felt some pressure (sudden sharp pain). I started walking toward the bathroom as I felt lightheaded. I started to get cold sweat, vision blur, and light ringing in my ears. Basically it was symptoms of someone who is about to faint. I started breathing and calming myself as I sat on the toilet. Eventually I felt somewhat better but very tired, drowsy, and constant dull ache in stomach. I started to feel nauseous and I lost appetite.

It is day three now and my bowel movement isn’t quite back to normal. I went diarrhea once but it wasn’t severe. I still have some dull pain below belly button especially if I put pressure but I sleep before than other day. I also get a little bit of lower abdomen ache as I urine. I took motrin (ibuprofen) on the day it happened and that helped. So… what I just explained sounds like ruptured ovarian cyst? As I mentioned I do not have health insurance so I am self-diagnosing =(. Anyway, thanks again for blogging about this and thank you ladies for sharing your stories in the comments.

Thank you so much for posting your story and links. I have been having these episodes of throbbing pain in my groin area for 10 years, running tests that never were conclusive and doing physical therapy that never really helped. Doctors could not nail it down, and as long as it was manageable I quit asking them anything.
But over the pas few days the pain walked me up one night, I could not sleep nor walk in the morning. I just did the minimum I had to do. I called my ob since she is my best doctor, and she scheduled an ultrasound appointment. She prescribed some diclofenac; but it did not really help, I sat in beds for 3 days. Yesterday I got a vaginal ultrasound and they could see the ruptured cyst. The ultrasound irritated the pain even more... But the great thing is that I do not care about the pain I am feeling any more because I now know what it is and I know that I am not crazy... People who listened to me for years were so skeptical of my story.
My ob thinks that because I skip my pill too often and double it up or even take 3 at the same time, this is responsible for these cysts to form and burst.
I admit my mistake and I will sure be more careful now. What makes me smile is that the pill was supposed to eliminate the cysts at the first place since I had problems with that before... but since I was not doing a great job taking it I ended up creating a cyst factory : ) I learned my lesson.

I know it's been years since you posted about your cyst rupture, buying want to thank you. I have had 3 difficult ruptures since Sept. 2011. The doctors have been horrible, at best saying they are tricky, at worst saying a ping pong ball sized (and still growing) cyst can't cause pain. It's nice to know my symptoms are normal, and that a lot of doctors are clueless. Thanks again, it helps to know I am not alone.

I had a cyst rupture a week ago. It felt like I was in labor all over again. I called the help nurse and they made an appt. for me for the next day. I had both types of ultrasounds done and they determined my cyst was 9cm. I saw on the screen just how much liquid is in a 9cm cyst and the deflated bubble if you will. They sent me home with no other information other then " the worst part is over!" I am on the Mini Pill and I started bleeding about two days ago. This is unlike ANY period I have ever had before and it is thick and chunky ( sorry for the mental visual ) anyway, has anyone experienced that symptom after a rupture?

Thank you for writing this. On Monday I had horrible stabbing pain radiating up to my left kidney and down to my knee. I was curled into a ball breathing through the pain for 8 hours, longer than my second and third labors combined. I called my OB/GYN office early on and was never called back. I was called on Wednesday by my OB/GYN and informed that my ultrasound from a week before showed multiple huge cysts on my left kidney. I told him about the pain on Monday and the nausea, vomiting, fever, and weakness I have been feeling. I asked if one of those cysts could have burst and he just did the whole "hmmm." Thing and told me he would discuss my cysts and uterine tumor that was also found at my next appointment in 2 weeks. I am still nauseous, I am so weak and shaky. I am grateful that you wrote about your experience. It helped me feel less alone and ignored.

I was hospitalized about a month ago for ovarian cyst rupture. I felt slight cramping after intercourse, which progress to extreme pain in my pelvic area. The pain contunued gradually upto my abdominal . I felt like my intestines were swollen, my lungs too. I could not breath normally, felt like I was short of breath. I had to crawl to the bathroom from the pain. I had to vomit and release myself (diarrhea syntoms) at the same time. Feeling like I was going to passout, I felt numbness in my thighs and legs. My stomach was so swollen it hurt to lay on my sides or on my belly or on my back. I felt less pain when sitting down. When I went to the hospital they gave antibiotics pain meds. After many test they determined I had a cyst rupture (fluid in the morrison pouch). I stayed in the hospital for 1 night. I did not need surgery. I have a follow up to make sure there no more blood inside my pelvic in 1 week. Im 29 yrs old I have no children. The pain is unbearable I wish no one ever goes through the pain I felt. I hope this info helps.

Thank you so much for sharing your story. I just ruptured my ovarian cyst yesterday and was in the hospital last night with horrible lower abdominal pain. The doctors in the emergency room didn't want to run any tests on me, and did not want to say specifically what my problems were. They just gave me a shot of anti-imflammatories and sent me on my way.

Mind you I am 26 and getting married in 2 days. My lower abdomen is descended and ridiculously bloated. I know I won't be able to recover fully in time for my wedding or my honeymoon and will not be able to see a doctor for full tests until after I get back from my vacation. I really wish doctors would be a little more insistent on doing ultrasounds in the ER as well as other tests, but their was a huge amount of apathy concerning my situation. I'm trying to remain as calm as possible so my nerves don't get to me on my big day. It could be worse, at least this happened before my wedding and not during!

This information and everyone's comments following have been so helpful and reassuring. The local doctor believes I ruptured a cyst (don't know how big - he didn't tell me) yesterday, so I'm glad to know that this lingering pressure and aching is normal. I'm living temporarily in a foreign country, so it was especially scary not having a good, reliable doctor to go to. Has anyone had a frequent, almost constant urge to urinate as one of your symptoms?

Thank you for writing this. I waited 5 days before I saw my doctor. I wasnt sure if i was really that bad off. He did a urine sample and blood draw and sent me off for an ultrasound. Actually 2 of them, the same ones you had. The only thing my doctor said for treatment was pain management. He tried to give me a prescription for Celebrex. I didn't have it filled after doing research on the drug. My pain lasted exactly one week and then completely went away. I felt pretty helpless during that week. I couldn't sleep well at night and every time I moved I felt like someone was stabbing my in my side. I think there need to be doctors who are a little more sensitive to this as it is debilitating when you go through it.

I don't know if anyone has tried this, but COD LIVER OIL, especially FERMENTED COD LIVER OIL from Green Pastures works WONDERFULLY at relieving the pain from burst ovarian cysts. I had 3 medium-sized cysts (around 3 cm) that burst this past month, Extremely painful, but I could function totally normal with 2-3 TABLESPOONS of cod liver oil throughout the day. I tried using another brand of cod liver oil, which also worked though not as well and I had to take twice as much. I just wanted everyone to know that there IS a natural pain reliever for ovarian cysts other than the standard pain killers. I've been taking this for over a month now and will continue to do so until the pain decreases. It works within a half hour or so, just like a tylenol. Hope this is helpful to someone out there experiencing as much pain as I did!

Hi everyone. A month ago I had abdominal pain and found out I had a 6cm cyst. In addition from changing my birth control pill from ortho tricycline lo to just ortho tricycline, I went to a naturopath. The fact that we are all having ovarian cysts mean we have a hormone imbalance (too much estrogen). I cut out foods that had added hormones which meant buying free range meat and cutting out dairy completely. I ate only organic food and switched my soap, hair products, cleaning products etc to ones that contained no parabens (xenoestrogen). In addition I put castrol oil on my stomach almost every night for an hour with a heating pad and I also went on a whole body cleanse.
THE RESULT: a month later my cyst ruptured a couple days ago and I only felt an excruciating twinge for about 30 seconds. I had a tiny bit of pain and twinges after that but nothing unbearable in the least.. I went to bed comfortably and the next day I went into the ER to get a sonogram. They found no cyst, no fluid, nothing. I think I got pretty lucky and think the cyst had shrunk from the diet change, lifestyle change, body cleanse, and castrol oil. I wanted to share this so you all don't feel helpless. You can get rid of these things! Or atleast mitigate the pain naturally.

Over a year I would have random pains In my lower abdomen area mostly the right side. For a long time I thought I was experiencing gas pressure. So I would relieve myself or go to sleep and the pain would subside. I was different doctors about my issue and they never request to have any scans done to check for cyst. After giving birth to my little girl by c-section I noticed after the 6 week recovery my pains were different prior to being pregnant. Around October and November I experienced having 2 menstrual cycles those months which I thought it was my body still recovering from the c-section. Just this month I would have dull throbbing pain that would come and go every other day. Just this past Thursday night the pain was more severe than normal. I was in so much pain I had to get help to the restroom to relieve myself. Once I made it the pain to urinate was like no other pain I have experienced. Once I finally made it to the bed I was in agony to relax. I tried laying on my side which the right side was off limits to lay on since the pain was close to that area. Later when trying to place a pillow between my legs for comfort. The ultimate fall out the bed, calling on my Heavenly Father of pain arrived. I felt like something had trying to bust or busting at that moment. Going through 12 hours of labor (which was long term pain) has nothing on the pain I went through with this. Next day I went to the doctor and had blood work and CT Scan done that showed I had an ruptured ovarian cyst. Which the nurse called to give the information that they called in a pain medicine and there was nothing else to be done. If I had not come across this post I would have not known the beneficial tips to recover. Plus medicines to help with preventing fluid to get in my abdominal cavity. Thank you for writing this blog. You have helped so many people by sharing your experience.

I am 30 years old and have had several cysts rupture in the last 5 years. The pain is debilitating and its unbelievable there isn't more that can be done.
My last rupture was yesterday. Everything was fine and I suddenly there was intense pain in my left lower back. I knew right away it was a cyst and prayed it wouldn't be that bad this time. Well....it was the worst one yet. I was doubled over in pain, moved to the couch where I writhed in agony for about 20 minutes. I was getting the sweats, and new I was going to vomit (has happened all but 1 time when my cysts have ruptured). I ran as quickly as I could to the bathroom (small shuffling baby steps as I'm crouched over like a 90 year old) where I got sick. Usually after vomiting the pain starts to subside and lowers from a 200 million to a 9 on a 1-10 threshold of pain scale. This time that wasn't the case. I waddled bent over back to bed to suffer and roll around in agonizing pain. From sweating hot to teeth chattering cold. I vomited again and this time was the last. Pain finally subsided to about a 7-8 where I was able to fall asleep. The odd thing about this time was the pain started in my right lower back, wrapped around the front to affect my entire stomach, and reached to my left side and hip, traveling higher up my left side than it ever has before. You truly feel as if you are dying. I've never given birth but I'm sure I don't have to now. Now it's the next day, less than 24 hours later and I am more sensitive than I have ever been after having a cyst rupture. The pain when urinating this morning was intense, more like a feeling on my bladder. I'm still walking around hunched over like a 90 year old (I've only walked from the bed to tub so far) but am hoping it will subside soon. The drs think I have endometriosis and that's why I have cysts like this. They are also kinda clueless. Some say laparoscopic surgery but I've ready about people who have had it done 7 times, only for endo tissue to keep growing back and causing cysts. I've been told a hysterectomy is an option but I'm only 30 and am afraid, in addition to reading that endo and cysts CAN and DO come back after hysterectomy's. It feels hopeless sometimes. I found a dr who is helping me chart my cycle so we can do some testing during the right times of my cycle to determine if there is an underlying cause to the endo and cysts that we can address, before throwing me into surgery, possibly again and again. Good luck ladies, I wish you all the best.

Thanks for sharing your story and your helpful tips. We need more people like you who aren't afraid to talk about what's actually happening.
I had no idea the recovery period was normal...people didn't believe me. Thanks so much!!

Holy crap. All these comments are almost spot on what I went thru including the op posting. I have two kids. No stranger to pain esp after 60+ hours of full felt labor between the two. The pain I experienced yesterday was like that of labor pains but I never got a break. It was like a constant contraction for almost 2 hours. Went to an urgent care clinic they sent me to e.r. Once in the e.r. they gave me tramadol, morphine, and an anti nausea thru my I.V. they wheeled in the ultrasound equipment and found a good amount of free fluid indicating a rupture. And yes, the vaginal ultrasound hurt like no one's business. They also had me go thru a cat scan to to rule out my appendix. Those results found an even greater amount of fluid which indicated to them that I had a rather large cyst on the right overie that had ruptured. Gave me a Rx for vicodin and ibuprofen and sent me home. They did explain that I should expect uncomfortable pain for about a week and to follow up to make sure there is no infection. I'm only on day two and awake early in the morning due to the pain.

I've had all the same issues, except the doctor last time knew what it was right away. This time I didn't go to the ER, because I knew what it was. However, I'm feeling totally bloated in my upper abdomen. Has anyone had this?

Unknown said...

I know this is a super old blog but thank you for sharing it! I've had lower pelvic pain, bloating, nausea, and cramping for 5 days. Went to urgent care to get checked out and they tested me for UTI, bladder infection, and pregnancy all of which were negative. Woke up this morning in EXTREME pain. Like labor pain. Crying and could barely walk. Had my husband take me to the ER. I was there for 6.5 hours and an ultrasound finally found fluid and follicles in my ovary. DR said it was a ruptured cyst. Then prescribed me norco and sent me on my way with instructions to return if it got a lot worse or if I got a fever. Once the pain meds from the hospital wore off the pain came back full force and I just now took some more pain killers. Its nice to read about how long it will take to recover, although somewhat scary as I have a 3 year old and a 1 year old and my husband has to go to work tomorrow. Thanks!

Thank you for writing this article. It has been a day since I was released from the hospital, and I feel ...well...tired...nauseous (but not strong enough to provoke vomiting). The doctor told me that I should be well enough to return to the gym, but I'm glad that I played it safe and got some well needed rest. It certainly doesn't make me feel any better that my monthly has started...which adds on to the discomfort. I'm just relieved that my symptoms aren't super strange....sorry if this double posts. I'm using a phone thanks to computer issues.

Hello Al, I am writing because my little sister who is 30 years old just had her tumors and ovaries taken out 4 days ago. She was discharged yesterday, only to be back in the ER today due to an apparent burst of internal fluids of some sort. I just spoke to her and her current status is leaking fluids from the incision , a fever and constant vomiting up green liquids. The ER staff has restricted her to NPO, constantly sticking her and drugging her for the pain. I am in dire need of some education from women who have experienced this. god bless you all.

As I lay here on my couch, thank you so much. I went to my PCP last Friday because that Thursday night I experienced the same stabbing sword pain in my lower right abdomen area, that you described. Mine was followed by a sharp pain that shot across my chest to my left side, leaving me numb from my arm up into the side of my face... Scariest moment of my life. The numb/paralysis only lasted about 10 minutes but some numbness remained. Yes, I know now that this above all things should have queued me to call the hospital but my kids lay sleeping in the other room and the feeling was so unreal that I thought I'd lost my mind. I suddenly became weak and very lethargic so I lay down. I woke up early the next morning and called my PCP, waited and no response from them. I was still a little numb on left side but pain was back to feeling strong in lower abdomen. Finally just drove to PCP office and his medical assistant pulled me to the side to ask the matter and then left to report to him. She came back promptly and told me that he said to take Tylenol for the pain and if the numbness on my left side continued, go to the ER. I was so upset and almost just went back home. I decided instead to go across the street to an Urgent care clinic. They found that I had the ruptured cyst and even did full testing coming up with a possible small clot that had formed and passed causing a possible TIA(mini stroke). I had all signs and symptoms and was immediately put on aspirin regimen and pain meds. Now a week later, I have had follow up with a my previous OBGYN, all have been upset over care "not" given by my PCP. Although, pain has continued, when you have a team of people genuinely concerned about you, it helps with some relief.

Thank you for writing this I went to the hospital Sunday and the idiot doctor told me I had Kidney stones, and sent me home with percocet, after no ultrasound or CT Scan. I then went back as he recommended if it had not passed to go back to ER I went back the this new Dr. Was astonished he never sent me for a CT scan on Sunday so he sent me along and results came back to a ruptured Ovarian cyst.. I am in agony and all he could say it could last up to a week. I have no clue how long it will last I am exhausted cause I cant sleep from the pain, and I am taking everything under the sun to make myself feel better and still be able to take care of my 2 kids and get them to their extra curricular activities. My husband has offered to stay home but I keep sending him off to work and thankfully I have amazing friends who have stepped in to help out with taking th kids to and from school..But thank you for giving me some insight on what to do to help relieve the pain, and make me feel better and that I am not in fact going to die in agony from this.

Wow. This blog was extremely helpful. As others have mentioned it has been so hard to get information on ruptured ovarian cyst. I’m about three weeks into an episode. I went in to the doctor after having serve pain in my mid back/abdomen for about two weeks. It started small but had progressed to where it was hard to bend over to pick anything up off the ground, sharp pain when I would tilt my chin to my chest, difficulty sitting up in bed, throbbing/cramping pain on my side, pelvic area and mid-back. Sometimes a twisting or pushing feelings. They originally diagnosed me with a kidney stone, gave me meds and sent me home. I spent the weekend in bed, with a heating pad. Super painful cramping in my mid back area, threw up a few times and just felt exhausted. They pain was also moving to my side, and then my pelvic area. Then would almost explode in my mid back on the right side. After four days of taking medicine for a kidney stone I made another appointment with my primary care physician. The doctor tested my urine again and said no blood so I likely didn’t have a kidney stone. We also completed my annual PAP to have additional information. The doctor then ordered a CT scan. When the results came back it showed that my pelvic structures remarkable for 2.7 cm cystic change of the right ovary with free fluid tracking from the right adnexa with posterior cul-de-sac. Finding likely represent rupture of a physiologic right ovarian cyst with fluid tracking into the posterior cul-de-sac. Further evaluation could be accomplished with dedicated pelvic ultrasound. Again they told me that this was something “common” and not to worry, that I basically just needed to ride it out, but they could give me pain meds. Due to a history of endometriosis in my family I felt this possible ruptured cyst need to be addressed so that I could be sure there was nothing more serious going on. Next step: made an appointment to see a urologist and his findings matched: no kidney stone, but suggested that since I was still feeling so much pain to see my OBGYN and to also have a pelvic and abdominal ultrasound. He said it could be something related to my gull bladder or appendix. At this point I started taking pain meds. But was feeling like the pain was actually getting worse. I could still feel the cramping, twisting and sometimes sharp pain through the meds! I was so close to going to the ER, but I had an appt scheduled with my OBGYN the next morning. OBGYN doctor did some tests on my abdomen & pelvic area, reviewed the CT scan results and tested by urine again to rule of an ectopic pregnancy. She then gave me a referral to have an abdominal, pelvic and transvaginal ultrasound. The first two were typical ultrasounds where they put the goo on your belly and rub the little scanner across your body. But, the last was not fun. They stick a huge rod up your vagina, but it allows them to see what’s exactly going on. My results should come in on Monday. But, the ultrasound did confirm that I do have cyst on my right ovary, it could be remnants of a ruptured cyst or still live (if that’s the correct term). Throughout the past couple weeks I now have had a total of 6 appointments. I have been the one to push and for the tests and answers. DON’T be afraid ask questions and to almost “demand” testing. If you feel like something is wrong with YOUR body, it’s in your hands to guide this process. It is super frustrating and very stressful. I’ve cried so many times over the past couple weeks. But, I’m so glad to have some answers and to have confidence in my treatment plan.

Thank you for your story, I am currently harboring 2 cysts 1 on each ovary they are 4cm and 3cm respectively. I thought last night that the right one had ruptured, the pain was bad, and I vomited was shaking and clammy skin. My husband brought me to the OBG/GYN today and they had not ruptured after having my 3rd ultra sound (my primary has been keeping a watch on my "Little Guests")it was proven that they were in fact still in tact. So I now sit here with my 2 "Little Guests" and hope they don't explode, the pain I felt last night was horrific, so if one of these "guests" decide to blow I now have a guide to go by with your post and what to expect.

Question: do any of you that have known cysts, have gas issues, or back pain, or lower abdominal pain? I ask because my abdomen is very sore, I do get lower back pain and am gassy. The doctor also thought maybe I passed a small kidney stone, so at this point my cysts are in tact and stowing away on a free ride, hoping they just dry up and go away, but it's been 3 months and they are still there.

Again thank you for your post, and information.

Let me add m thanks and appreciation to everyone else's. I had a sharp stabbing pain like a knife in my lower stomach, along w/ hot spells, cold, vomiting. It was so awful that I knew I should have gone to the hospital but could not imagine feeling well enough to get dressed, get my things together, etc. By the next morning, I had a dull pain and deep heaviness in my stomach. It only continued and worsened. When I went to urgent care, I was first misdiagnosed as having food poisoning and then transferred to the ER where I had a CT scan. That's where the doctor guessed that I had a cyst rupture. She gave me morphine and Zofran for nausea and prescribed two days of bed rest and said I would start feeling better after that. It's the second day, and I'm feeling better than I was, but still feel extremely bloated and can't imagine doing much more than a little bit of walking. I have run marathons and am so used to being active.

I feel so much better after reading this. My sixteen year old daughter just had a 6.2cm ovarian cyst rupture and everyone was concerned until it ruptured. Then the doctor, nurses, and sonographers were like, "no big deal!" We'll, it is a big deal. This was four days ago and she still has nausea, diarrhea, pain, and vomiting. We were told it ruptured and it hurts like hell for a second and then it is done. I don't think so. My daughter is tough and does nig like to be bed ridden. She's 16! She wants to be out running around driving her car mad hanging with friends......it's unlike her. The gynecologist made her feel like her aftermath was not real. So I have my child crying asking me why she isn't better and a doctor saying a cyst ruptures and all should be well. I read your story to her and it brought comfort to her to know she isn't.crazy and recovery from this takes time. Thank you so much. Your article brought much comfort to a scared mad sick young girl!,,

I was having a hip x-ray and the x-ray lady was really concerned and gentle with me. Helping me off the table and aiding me to my chair.. The Orthopaedic surgeon met with me three weeks later and said you know about this yes, I said I had a fair idea.. I had been in pain off and on for years. My Stomach changed into a football and I couldn't hold it in. My Doctor sent me to have an ultra sound they deemed it was nothing and come back in 9 months for another ultrasound - I was puzzled as the talk in the room was totally different 2 masses and teeth were in the discussion amongst the staff in there. I insisted on seeing a gyno as not one person had asked if I was in any pain.. The Gyno sent me back for another ultra sound and sent me for some blood tests. The Lady that did the next round of tests started off a bit sarcastic and then she went into shock and was verbalising her findings. Cysts on top of cysts all the same size new cyst formed on the other left Ovary just as large as the ones on the right a few little one and the first cyst was now ruptured right at the top and was leaking into itself.. two days before nearly rang an ambulance I was in so much pain It will probably take a few weeks for them to make a new appointment to discuss the finding so in the meantime I just have to suffer the diarrhea the volcano in my lower gut and that general feeling of unwellness.. At least now I know all this is normal and I am not imagined.. You start to double check your sanity you really do..

Thank you for your post. On the evening of the 29th of January I was doing some laundry an when I went to bend over I had a terrible pain what felt like something had a hold of my left ovary an was squeezing the heck out of it. I also experienced pain in my lower left side of my back at the same time. The pain was excruciating! I have had 3 children, fibromyalgia, scoliosis in lower back. So, I can handle a lot of pain. On the 30th of January I started light bleeding ,but this had some type of tissue after wiping. I have never had that before so it was curious as to what it even was. I also past a little more the next day. The bleeding lasted from start to finish roughly 7 days. It is now the 23rd of February an I'm still having discomfort an pain in the same spot. I've also been having extremely tender breast.I just had to have a biopsy on 18th of February to check for cervical cancer an had a sonogram the 19th of February to check ovaries an there was still fluid showing on left side. They said there was a small cyst on my left ovary so now I'm wondering if that one is going to grow an do the same thing. I just don't understand why I'm still having pain in the exact same areas, but just not as severe. The pain has been on and off though. I've called my doctor yesterday an waiting for an answer to everything or for them to just tell me oh your fine. It does seem to me that if your not on your death bed a lot of doctors just don't want to listen.

This article made me feel a little more normal and a lot less alone. A year and 1/2 ago I experienced my 1st ruptured cyst. The pain was indescribable. I couldnt do anything without feeling like I wanted to scream from the pain. I couldn't even go to the bathroom because any kind of pushing hurt so bad. After going to the doctor the next morning, I was sent directly to get an ultrasound. They said I had a cyst rupture and that i still had another one on my left ovary. I'd never heard anything like this so naturally I was scared. I was given Vicodin for the pain and on bed rest for 3 days and then back to work and felt fine. 6 months later they had me come in for another round of ultrasounds which felt pretty aggressive while they got every angle inside me with that "magic wand" to find out that my cyst was still there on my left ovary and that was that. Fast forward to 5 months later which was two nights ago, I woke up at 4am with really bad lower abdominal pain like I had to pee. I got up and went pee and then came back to bed and that is when all hell broke loose. The pain was 10x worse than I remember! I woke my boyfriend up for help because I was shaking from the unimaginable pain I was in. I took ibprofin and was in that pain for the next hour. Since I had been through it before, I felt like it was useless going to the ER since I still had Vicodin left over from the last time (which I didn't take since I had already taken ibprofin). During that horrific hour I felt like I was going to vomit so I basically crawled to the bathroom to puke until I felt really lightheaded and felt like I was going to pass out so I hurried back to the bedroom and lay in front of the fan (which helped so much!) I just laid there feeling so helpless and in the worst pain if ever felt (I'm 27 and never given birth before, just to put that out there). Once the pain FINALLY went from a 111847382 to a 4 on a scale of 1-10, I was able to fall asleep. I woke up the next day and I could barely stand. My stomach was so swollen/bloated and it was so sore. It's been two days since it happened and my stomach is still sore, my fever goes up and down between 99.0-102.3, I get lightheaded often and nauseous. It will be another day in bed tomorrow and I'm seeing a specialist next week for more ultrasounds. Thank you all for sharing your experience as I now know we're all in this fight together.

I am not sure how long ago you wrote this but yes, I've had two ruptured cysts on my ovaries and gassy is normal. I'm currently still dealing with the pain as this happened to me two nights ago. My stomach area is extremely sore and my back aches. It's crazy they are saying you didn't have one rupture. I hope you feel better!

Now I am picking from what you ladies have to say that is was more than likey a burst cyst..
I stil have not heard from my Specialst and I am due for a Knee operation in March they may knock me back now because the cyst could be deemed a risk factor..

Well I finally got to see a specialist 2 weeks after my knee operation and he has agreed that this problem will not be addressed by medication so I am on a waiting list to have both Ovaries and Tubes removed within the next 4 -6 months I nearly cried with relief.. All the drama and this is only an overnight stay in Hospital I can't even begin to express how elated I feel.. Will keep you posted as I really think I am going to a different person after this Pain relates as Unhappiness to other which is simply not true.

Day One: The cyst ruptured on Mother's Day! Thank goodness my son was out of the house and was spared the sight of me writhing about in agony. I did not know it was a cyst, and the pain occurred just after I had done some heavy lifting, so I thought is might be muscular strain. Then I thought it might be food poisoning, because of the sudden onset of cramping in my abdomen. I ran to the toilet and grabbed a bucket, prepared to purge. When I did vomit, it was not from stomach upset, it was because the pain was so acute I threw up. I was panting and beginning to hyperventilate and getting panicky. I managed to call a friend for help, and it was a relief when she arrived because I was sure I was about to pass out from the pain. 8 years prior I had a C-section, and this cramping knifing pain was raidiating all along my incision scar, along my bikini line. Then it extended along my pelvic floor and around back like I had been kicked in the butt. After an hour and a half, the spasm subsided, and I felt exhausted and tender in my lower abdomen. I was having flashbacks from a miscarriage I had had 27 years earlier, when the pain had been that intense. Memories of lying on the hospital floor in foetal position were what kept me from heading to Emergency this time. Day Two: After a good night's sleep, in the morning called my GP because I was still tender and stiff and bloated. I wanted to hear her say that it was ok and I would not experience another episode of acute pain! She sent me for a a trans-vaginal ultrasound. That was pretty invasive, but not relatively painful. Day 3: I woke up feeling pretty normal and was able to get around better, not bent over protecting my belly like before. My doctor called to say the ultrasound showed an ovarian cyst had burst and there was blood and fluid in the abdominal cavity, and to come see her if I develop a fever or the pain worsens. Ew. Googled way too many images of cysts, and now imagining my innards sloshing with displaced fluids. Day 4: Feeling the after-effects of the shock, physical and emotional. Hyper aware of the sensation in my belly, liver feeling tender too, she must be working hard to detox and deal with the after-effects. Tired and having difficulty concentrating. Going to sleep as much as possible and support my healing with good food and gentle exercise. For all my kindred sufferers out there, take good care of yourselves and be strong advocates for reproductive health! Thanks to the original blogger, how wonderful this has taken on a life of its own as women learn from shared experience!

Can't even begin to thank you enough for this post and the comments. I thought I was crazy and I am not. Day 4 and still not up to my usual high energy self. I have a very high pain tolerance and this literally brought me to my knees. Labor and delivery were easy and almost pain-free in comparison. I was out of town and staying in a hotel in an unfamiliar city. I tried to pack so I could check out and at least call a cab since I knew I couldn't drive. After a few hours the pain was getting worse so I had to give up and call for an ambulance. Everyone at the hospital thought I had kidney stones until CT scan showed no stones but other cysts. They finally found a combination of pain medication that made a dent in the pain and took it to a 7 or 8 after being 10+ most of the day. I thought I would be okay a day or so later. All of your comments have made me understand that it will take some time and I shouldn't be so hard on myself. I am not very good at resting and relaxing but am trying. Thank you all so much!!! C

About 3 weeks ago I almost died due to an ovarian cyst rupture. I was sitting in my bed on FB when that pain hit me. I thought,"OH GOD a cyst". I have endometriosis so I am familiar with cyst pain and ruptures. But this was diffrent. I knew something more was going on. I started puking everywhere. I passed out in the hall trying to get to the car. My husband picked me up and rushed me to the hospital. They pumped me full of Morphine and started with test. Then a CT SCAN. My abdomen had a lot of blood and I was still bleeding. I started going into shock. They rushed me to another big hospital were I was admitted for 4 days. I am still having after effects but I am much better. Now my doctor is telling me I may need to consider having my ovaries removed.

OMG Thank heaven your husband was at home. I hope they get this fixed properly for you sooner rather than later. For your health sake and for peace of mind get the ovaries removed.. I am counting the days to have mine removed and as yet I have not heard from them.. At the moment my pain in niggardly but bearable.. Good luck with your operation and don't let them delay..
Doctors might well be able to fix things but they have no personal experience of the pain involved..

Its been 12 days since i went to er and discovered the excruciating pain was from a large ruptured cyst on my right ovary. They gave me naproxen for pain and a weeks worth of cipro due to infection that they found in my urine. I already missed 4 days of work due to this and ive been off the past two days. Im scheduled to go back in tomorrow and im having strange symptoms and no relief at all. Im now burning up, chills every now and then (when it ruptured i had shaking violent chills) i cant find my thermometer to see if i have fever but im pretty sure i do. My head is throbbing and im not hurting as bad in my abdomen but the back pain, omg. Its horrible. The local er doesnt like to hive strong pain meds but i believe i do need them at this point but i dont know what to do. I hate going to er, let alone, going BACK. Im trying to find relief at home. Any advice would be appreciated, even if it is, "go back to er" thanks

I knew I had a 7.9 cyst on left ovary and was told to wait and see what happened. I woke up yesterday at 5 am in horrible pain on my left side right where my ovary would be. I called my dad , who is visiting from Oregon, I was balling like a baby. He came over and stayed with my preschooler so i could go to e.r. the pain ebbed a bit and i drove myself down the street to the e.r.
I was badly sunburned from going to a Bernie sanders rally the day prior, so they could NOT find a vein due to dehydration And the body shuts down when in pain and keeps blood close to the core. I was poked by five nurses, finally they got an ultrasound machine to find a vein. That was over two hrs before they finally just gave me a shot of painkillers in my muscle. I snapped at the Dr "you let me lay in agony for this whole time when you could've given me this pain med long ago? !!" I felt as if I was in labor. I thought I was truly going to die. I got ultrasound done both vaginally And on my tummy . The cyst was down to 4.5cm at that point. I was violently puking and diarreahing at the same time. The fluid from the cyst irritates the inside of the abdomen And your body wants it out so you throw up and diarrhea Like crazy. I was sent home with norco pain meds and anti nausea meds. I'm alarmed read that so many women wetter given NOTHING for pain! !

Hey hun (and others) while very little can be done after a cyst ruptures (just had one do so a week back) we CAN reduce the amount we get! Using chickweed tincture! I had 4 and shrank away all but the large one that ruptured. Do Google "Susun Weed Ovarian Cyst" there is a lot there to help!

I realize that you posted this 8 years ago, but it's still the most relevant article posted on the Internet for post-cystic rupture. THANK YOU!

Unknown said...

This is the most relevant article on the internet still that i have found.i had my first cyst it has been very almost year since the pain started I finally went to obgyn place and they confirmed it was only a mere 2cm. I got engaged a year ago. Sex has been a pain the entirety of my engagement and I ruptured it this article very clearly describes and other blogs I have read all women describe similar pains to giving childbirth which is astonishing. I am not a mother. Yes I cried and screamed for a very long time went to ER they confirmed it ruptured and gave me morphine. It has been a month and the pain has not subsided. I still cannot have sex. I want to go to see the obgyn place but I do not want to pay the price because there is NO help for a cyst. At all. Come back it 8 weeks and pay almost $300 for sonogram and visit in total with insurance. Then we will say yes it is still there.

Do people still talk on here? Because I've been searching everywhere for information on my situation and I haven't found much, so I'm just going to be blunt and honest. Friday night, my honey and I were "doing things" and I felt a really sharp pain in my lower abdomen. It was like a pinch. We had to stop, and the pain gradually progressed really fast. I couldn't even get up, thats how bad it hurt. I also should say that my period is really rough on me, and my cramps have been so bad that sometimes I had to stay out of school. The pain I experienced was so much more painful than those. It was like a pressure, like something had burst or was about to. I cried from it for about an hour, and the whole time my boyfriend was comforting me and googling what could have happened. It also felt like I had gas because I had a sharp pain in my rectum. After a while it got a little bit better, but it didn't go away. I was able to move, but it was painful. And when I went to the bathroom, it hurt to pee. I felt shooting pains all thru my abdomen and I had to pee really slow. We then went to sleep, and every time I moved it woke me up. When I woke up the next morning, it was really tender like my insides had been stretched. It was there all day Saturday and now it's Sunday night and it's still there. I'm really concerned. Can anyone help me out?

Unknown said...

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I've been in pain since Thurs, thought was passing a kidney stone or bladder infection. Monday's dr visit showed free fluid, no stone or infection. The female GP said Tylenol/Motrin and the pain should only last 2 days. I thought I was being weak when I asked why I was still in pain. OTC pain relievers still not cutting it.

Unknown said...

I had a cyst partially rupture Oct 30th 2016 today is Nov 11th, when it happened it started with pinching pain in my lower left pelvic region which is a familiar feeling for me when I'm about to ovulate so I thought nothing of it I also had breast tenderness for a week prior to this and is still present now. The evening it happened I kept feeling like I needed to use the Bathroom so I tried it was then that that pinching pain instantly spread across my entire pelvic area and everything inside it from my vaginal connal to my bowls I couldn't sit or stand up straight and I'm no stranger to pain and my pain and I knew something was wrong and I did something I probably shouldn't have which is drive myself to the hospital which was difficult not being able to fully sit without feel like someone shoved a long blade up my vage by the time I got there I could no longer walk my pain scale was a 9 sometimes a 10 when having to get up and out of the bed because of that pain when sitting, any pressure between my legs wether more tward my vagina or my bowls was excruciating they had to wait till they got morphine in me before they could perform a pelvic and ultrasounds and even then my level was still a 6-7. my labwork showed and elevated white blood count so I was prescribed pain meds and an antibiotic, that night it felt like I was carrying a rock in my lower abdomen. The next day I looked 5 months preg in the morning and 7 months by afternoon my stomach was distended and firm from breast to pubic bone and over the phone my doc was worried about a bleed so back into the er I went where they did more blood work to check my counts and check for anemia and they took x rays and I was discharged being told that there is fluid/blood in my abdomen but that it wasn't an active bleed so they said to fallow up with my obgyn. The fallowing 9 days the bloat decreased and my only discomfort was emptying of my bladder, trying #2, and if I say the wrong way it felt like I got sucker punched in my cervix/bowel. But then day 11 "yesterday" my ovary started pinching again and it felt like day 2 all over again and then today I started bleeding vaginally I'm atm assuming it's my cycle starting but it was a very painful morning it didn't matter if I moved or not I was in a constant level 8 pain with waves of level 9 I took 800mg of ibuprofen which has finally elevated a large amount of the pain but I still can't sit otherwise it feels like there is something in either my vaginal connal or my bowel jabbing up into me and is unbearable and Ive taken stool softeners to be sure I'm not constipated so it's not that. It still hurts at the end of emptying my bladder "no burning" just the contracting of my bladder and my urine is dark I'm guessing my bladder is releasing the blood from my abdomen, So that is where I'm currently at my obgyn prescribed more pain meds and wants to repeat an ultrasound the beginning of January and they may to a procedure I forgot the name but they check for and clear any scar tissue/endometriosis and pop any existing cysts and he said my system should then function normal for a year. I definitely didn't expect for it to flare back up so much after a week and a half so I don't know...

Well Ladies I am writting my final message on this subject and I hope you all take heed. As you know I am a Kiwi and live in NZ.
I Openly admit I manipulated a clerical error and pushed to get my Cysts removed. It came through as one Csty on my Ovary and then it went to three on one ovary and two on the other. They agreed to remove the Fallopan and the Ovaries I am past my childbearing days and they made the procedure sould simple the Technololy they have these days is amazing. I was in hospital for under 24 hours 14 hours after surgery. 4 tiny little knicks 4 stiches my recovery was awesome.
I got the results and they said simple cysts OK I thought at least they wont get muliplying and turn cancerous.
IF YOU DON' READ ANYTHING ELSE IN THIS POST PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION

I asked for my Hospital records for another reason and I thought OK I will go pre Gyno Op.
I read the HISTOLOGY REPORTS and OMG
They Apogised to the Dr for the first report and most of it is Goblity Gook
MICROSCOPIC:

Sections from falliopian tubes show normal tubal epithelium with no evidence
inflamanion dysplasia or mainancy. Multiple foci are noted in the adjacent adnexae.
The second ovary measures 45x35x30mm and has a solid cysitc Component and appears to have a RUPTURED CYST.

SECTIONS: from te first descriped ovary shoiw a serous cystadenofibroma comprising fiberous call lined by a single layer of tall Colomular ciliated cells resembling normal tubal epithe and attenauted cubodial epithlium in parts. The cyst is multilocated. This is surround by a normal appaering ovarian.
Conculsion:
Bilateral Fallopian Tubes and Ovaries- Serous Cystadenorma both ovaries. Brenner Tumour x one ovary, normal falipain tubes ENDOSALPINGIOSIS.
Personal Foot note: I don't know what Doctors are up to this day they shove presciption at you all prescription come with readouts arning that cover allergic reaction why becuase I guess the warning are important. Tell a Doctor you had a allergic reaction and they call you a liar- I told one Dr I couldn't take a Hormone Cream and the readout said not to use if you have LUPUS
he wrote on a report that I thought I was allergic to everything and a little Hormone cream wasn't going to hurt me.
'You and only you know your own body don't take crap from Doctors who talk you down'

Your Doctor will have your best interest at heart and being as young a you are they must preceed with caution - you will not die but talk to your Doctor about your Option's and Pain management hopefully the worst is over for you and you will heal a lot quicker because of your age take it easy no heavy lifting or contact sports but please go back to your Doctor.. If you get any heavy bleeding ring the nearest Hospital if you can't talk to the Doctor on the phone.

Thank you for this. My ob says cyst don't hurt when they rupture. Had an ultrasound done last week and viewed the results online. I have multiple bilateral ovarian cyst yet when the doctor called he said my results came back normal. I've been having lots of pain and it'll hurt to walk at times. Now I know the pain is caused by my cyst and isn't just nothing.

I am presuming your Doctor is a male what a daft and irresponsible thing to say
Pain is a warning that something is wrong it should never be ignored.

MY NAME IS NITA.

Dr Williams, herbal treatment is the best to shrink fibroid naturally.

Four months ago, I was scheduled an operation to remove a fairly large uterine fibroid (approx. 8 cm), which had caused me a great deal of pelvic pain and pressure on my bladder. My doctor insisted that there was no other choice but to go under the knife and I had reluctantly agreed (after trying several medications to decrease the size of the fibroid to no avail). It was approx. 2 months prior to the surgery when my husband comes across dr williams herbal remedies which my husband found and ordered for me online. With the help of my loving husband, I followed the step and procedure on how i should be taking it. and one months later I was scheduled for an ultrasound check: it was shocking. The fibroid had completely gone, I had consulted my doctor and cancelled the surgery and with your dedicated counseling guidance I managed to completely treat the fibroid from my uterus, along with the pain and anxiety that this condition had inflicted on me. Thank you so much for your kind help, any body with similar problem should contact him on his email address drwilliams098675@gmail.com his a good man

ALL THANKS TO DR WILLIAMS

his product is by far the best plan for treating fibroids naturally...the practical step by step instructions and the detailed information regarding the real cause and how to treat uterine fibroids were a real eye opener. I started dr williams medication after intense bleeding and pain which occurred during one of my rehearsals (I am a professional violinist).I was later that week diagnosed with 2 medium sized fibroids which placed an enormous pressure on my bladder. I was advised by 3 different doctors to undergo surgery to remove these fibroids as I was told that there was nothing I could do to shrink or stop their growth. Luckily, I ran into dr williams by accident as I was searching for information on the net regarding my condition. I was so relieved to have found that surgery was not always the answer, that it can be dangerous and that uterine fibroid can return even after surgical intervention. In less than 4 weeks of taking dr williams herbal portion and following his instruction, both of my fibroid had shrunk by 100% and the second ultrasound taken 7 weeks after I began taking dr williams medication, had shown that both of these were completely gone. I also my periods became regular. and now am three months old pregnant, you can contact his email address on drwilliams098675@gmail.com for advice and for his product.
